The hospital has a JCI accreditation and is well known\nfor its cardiac specialization and for the use of robotic surgery in areas such\nas urology and gynecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hospital has a 24 beds general intensive\ncare unit (ICU) with about 1,800 patients\u2019 admissions per year. The head of the\nICU is Dr. Koen De Decker and medical staff is composed of 30 intensive care\nphysicians that use a patient data management system (PDMS) to manage daily\nprescriptions and patients\u2019 clinical parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the ICU of Aalst has a PDMS it is\nnot easy to generate ICU quality and performance indicators. Additionally, it\nhas no capabilities for benchmarking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solution<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICU was invited to participate on the\npilot of the MICA (Monitoring Intensive Care Activities) Project in 2017. The\nMICA Project aims to encourage the use of quality and performance indicators in\nBelgian ICUs and thereby improve the quality of intensive care medicine and increase\npatient safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Results<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience in using the Epimed Monitor\nICU software was so good that the hospital decided to contract the software\npermanently. As Dr. De Decker says, \u201cnow we have better insights, what we did\nnot have before and calculate in real-time many indicators like the\nStandardized Mortality Rate\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, according to Dr. De Decker the\nmedical staff considered the Epimed Monitor ICU software necessary, valuable\nand easy to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, Epimed Monitor software was\nintegrated with the hospital administrative software and now it is being\nintegrated with the PDMS system.
