In principe zijn er drie soorten indicatoren gebaseerd op de Donabediaanse Categorisatie (Donabedian 1978):<br \/>1. Structuur: beschrijft de organisatie, faciliteiten en personeelsbezetting. Vaak gaat het om aspecten die met grotere investeringen kunnen worden verbeterd;<br \/>2. Proces: beschrijft het zorgproces tussen de zorgverlener en de pati\u00ebnt. Het hangt meestal af van welke aspecten van de zorg gemakkelijker te veranderen zijn;<br \/>3. Uitkomst: beschrijft de uitkomst, vaak op het niveau van de pati\u00ebnt. Uiteindelijk is dit de belangrijkste indicator.<br \/>De eerste stap bij de evaluatie van de IC-prestaties is het defini\u00ebren van de indicatoren die moeten worden gecontroleerd. Ten tweede moet worden gezorgd voor de verzameling en opslag in een klinische database. Er zijn er verschillende beschikbaar.
