3 Steps to perform Safety Huddle in your institution

Healthcare institutions have been seeking strategies to implement a safety culture. And the Safety Huddle is a tool that increases efficiency, quality of information sharing, and definition of responsibilities.

The Safety Huddle is a tool consisting of short (10 to 15 minutes) and frequent meetings. These meetings enable teams to manage the quality of service and patient safety. It also allows them to flag concerns and identify potential failures before they happen.
The goal of conducting the Huddle is to identify near misses early, promote team discussions, and align improvement actions for adverse incidents/events.

Steps to Conduct a Safety Huddle
Step 1: Communicate successes and concerns

  • Events of the previous day or shift
  • Celebrate successes in quality and patient safety;
  • Provide feedback on what went well and what can be can be improved;
  • Report concerns related to patients and the multi-professional team;
  • Update the team on the handling of issues identified prior to the meeting.
