How to assess ICU efficiency for sepsis patients

Sepsis is one of the main causes of admission in Intensive Care Units in Brazil. When we look at clinical diagnoses, sepsis, regardless of its source, accounts for up to 35% of ICU admissions. We should also consider that a significant percentage of patients already admitted to the ICU acquire (nosocomial) sepsis as a complication of their admission, which makes the diagnosis even more prevalent and relevant for intensivists, patients, and patient’s relatives. One of the most important aspects in the lines of care for critically ill patients refers to the quality of care assessment method. Although we know that some measures traditionally used to assess ICU performance, such as prognostic scores, are proposed for assessing risk-adjusted mortality rate, in general, the effectiveness of such tools is not the same in sepsis, when compared to their use in ICU in general. In the paragraphs below, we will propose metrics for assessing care efficiency in sepsis patients, which are simultaneously robust, valid, and easy to apply.
